Q - Has the Coastal Navigation Exam changed?
A - At this time there is not a change to the exam.
Q - Can I order just the DVD?
A - ASA is providing the Coastal Navigation & Piloting resources as a package and cannot be broken up.
Q - I teach Coastal Navigation. Do you have an outline?
A - We recommend that you use the Table of Contents listed on pages iii
through v of the Coastal Navigation and Piloting book as a course
outline and follow the time sequence given in the Instructor's Guide Download pdf file
Q - Is this package enough to learn Coastal Navigation without attending a course?
A - Yes, Coastal Navigation & Piloting is designed as a tool for
home study or as a guide for classroom instruction where many subjects
can be explained in greater detail. It does include the Training
Chart 1210Tr which is also provided to the schools in their packets.
Q - Is the previous manual Coastal Navigation written by Mike Pyzel still available?
A - No, while this material has not changed since this was first
published over 20 years ago, ASA has wanted to add additional training
materials and upgrade the quality.

c. What is the Pub Number of the Atlas of Pilot Charts for the South Atlantic Ocean _____; the South Pacific Ocean _____; and the Indian Ocean _____.
d. What is the Pub Number of the Sailing Directions Enroute for the Southwest Coast of Africa _______; the Western Mediterranean _______; and Nova Scotia ________.
e. What is the Pub Number of the Sailing Directions Planning Guides for the Pacific Ocean _______ and Antarctica ___________.
Proceed as follows:
1. Go to http://www.nga.mil/portal/site/maritime/ This brings you to the NGA home page. Select Publications from the left hand menu.
2. This brings up the Nautical Publications page. In the Menu Options drop down box, select the publication needed as follows:
- For question 11a scroll down and select USCG Light List. This brings you to a list of Light List volumes. Choose Volume I for St Croix River, Volume III for Econfina River, and Volume VII for Great Lakes.
- For question 11b scroll to and select NGA List of Lights. This brings you a list of volumes for the List of Lights. Choose Volume 110 for Greenland, Volume 112 for Red Sea, and Volume 116 for Baltic Sea.
- For question 11c scroll to and select Atlas of Pilot Charts. This brings you to a list of Pilot Chart volumes. Choose Pub Number 105 for the South Atlantic Ocean, Pub Number 107 for the South Pacific Ocean, and Pub Number 109 for the Indian Ocean.
- For question 11d scroll to and select Sailing Directions. This brings you to a list of Sailing Directions Enroute volumes. Choose Pub Number 123 for the Southwest Coast of Africa, Pub Number 131 for the Western Mediterranean, and Pub Number 145 for Nova Scotia.
- For question 11e stay on the same page as the above and scroll further down to Sailing Directions Planning Guides and choose Pub Number 120 for the pacific Ocean and Pub Number 200 for Antarctica.

1. Go to http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/OnLineViewer.html and select Atlantic Coast. This will bring up a table of chart numbers and titles. Scan down this table to Cape Cod Bay for the needed information. (Hint: Start looking in the 13000 chart numbers)
2. NOAA sometimes changes their website pages. In the event that the link in step 1 does not work, Google "noaa chart viewer" to find the the correct NOAA page.
